A new era

New challenges,
fresh ideas

Addressing the challenges in the DaVinci Resolve Cut Page project was akin to untangling a complex web of user needs and technical expectations. The aim was to sculpt a seamless experience that caters to both professionals and emerging creators, maintaining the robust functionalities of the software while streamlining its usability.

The predominant challenge was to devise a system that enabled users to feel intuitively guided in their tasks, maintaining the sophisticated capability of the platform while mitigating complexity.

A major hurdle was to simplify and expedite the navigation process within the video timeline and to make moving clips around an effortless task. This challenge paved the way for the creation of the 'mini-timeline', a concept inspired by the minimaps seen in video games. This innovative feature allows users to see their entire timeline at all times, enabling them to manipulate and move clips within the mini timeline or from the main workspace. The mini timeline acts as a comprehensive guide, aiding users to navigate their projects effortlessly.

Conceptualizing these intuitive interactions required a significant amount of brainstorming, prototyping, and refinement. A comprehensive study on gestures such as drag, drop, move, stretch, and others were undertaken by analyzing a multitude of software applications and mobile apps. Each interaction was meticulously prototyped and tested to ensure it met the project's overall objective of simplifying the user experience while retaining the software's powerful capabilities. Through a thorough and iterative design process, the team successfully turned the challenges into opportunities for innovation.

The endeavor not only paved the way for a more inclusive user experience but also highlighted the importance of user-centricity in the face of complexity.

Key take aways

OVERVIEW

The DaVinci Resolve team set out to decrease the barrier to entry into professional video editing in reaction to the advent of social media and the subsequent trend toward more accessible content creation.

The objective was to design a feature that takes advantage of the software's engine's capabilities while making it accessible and user-friendly to a bigger audience.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

DaVinci Resolve is a powerful software used extensively in the film industry. However, as content creation became increasingly democratized, the need to create an accessible yet robust feature became apparent.

The challenge was to design an interface that maintained the software's advanced capabilities while catering to a less technically proficient user base.

PROCESS

Extensive research kicked off the process, which included exercises, user shadowing, user interviews, ideation workshops, and design sprints. This data informed initial wireframes and prototypes which were continually tested and refined.

This cycle of testing, feedback, and iteration was repeated until a final design was agreed upon, which was then specced out and handed over to the development team.

REFLECTIONS

This project gave a thorough overview of the whole design process as well as hands-on experience with numerous research methodologies. It emphasized the need for user-centered design in decreasing complexity, making technology more approachable, and generating memorable digital experiences. This experience drastically enhanced my problem-solving skills.

COLLABORATION

Utilizing Agile methodologies, the project was divided into manageable chunks visualized on Kanban boards.

This facilitated a collaborative environment where the team could engage in ideation sessions, critique sessions, and keep track of progress. Our iterative, feedback-driven approach ensured a constant focus on user needs and business objectives.

IMPACT

The project's success was reflected in the wide adoption of the new Cut Page feature and positive feedback from users.

It helped shift the brand image of Blackmagic Design to a more consumer-focused entity, demonstrating the company's ability to adapt and evolve with the changing landscape of content creation.
